Maastricht Wines is a wine estate in Durbanville, South Africa, that was founded in 1982 by Johannes Louw, who saw the potential of the location and the soil. The estate has 100 hectares of vineyards, planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir. The estate produces wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Durbanville wine valley, with fruit-driven white wines and well-balanced red wines.
The name Maastricht comes from the first settlers who were reminded of their hometown in the Netherlands by the clay-rich soils. The farm has a long history dating back to 1702, when it was granted to Hendrick Seeger, a Dutch settler. The original farmhouse burned down in the early 1900s, and the current one was built in the 1920s with additions by different owners over the years.
The winemaking process at Maastricht is a balance between tradition and technology, guided by the family and their experienced team. The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness and handled gently in the cellar, where they undergo various stages of fermentation, maturation, and bottling. The wines are named after the nine member farms that supply the grapes to the cellar.
Maastricht Wines is a family affair, with son Thys joining the farm in 2015 after studying business and winemaking in South Africa and abroad. His wife Melanie looks after the tasting room, hospitality, and private functions
