Arno Smith grew up with the best of both worlds, spending weekends and holidays on his mother’s family farm in the Tankwa Karoo, near Calvinia, and living in Cape Town’s Northern suburbs. While the city lights always felt like home, it was the farm and Karoo that truly captured his heart. His love for the open spaces, fresh air, and stunning landscape ignited a passion for farming and winemaking.

Inspired by family friend Lukas Wentzel, a winemaker at Groote Post, Arno’s interest in winemaking began early. After finishing school, he pursued a degree in Vini- and Viticulture, then traveled to America and Australia to deepen his knowledge of wine production and terroir.

In 2010, Arno began his first South African internship in the Darling wine valley under Wentzel’s mentorship. He later became the winemaker and farm manager at Hillcrest Estate in the Durbanville wine valley. After ten years of growing grapes and making wine, Arno decided to pursue his dream and founded Arno Smith Wine Company in 2021, using everything he’d learned to create top-quality wines.
